I Plant A Tree

The area is located 60 kilometres in the middle of the Hahnheide nature reserve not far from Trittau in the Stormarn district near the border with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It is a 64-year-old mixed conifer stand of European larch, spruce, pine and Douglas fir with individual Norway spruce trees.

Normally, in natural forest management, natural regeneration is adopted, as this comes from trees that feel comfortable on the respective site. In this stand, however, only a natural regeneration of conifers can develop, which is often ‘brush dense’ and leaves no room for mixed tree species. This does not correspond to our ideas of a climate-stable forest reorganisation.

The stand was therefore underplanted with 17,500 copper beeches in October 2023 - the emerging natural regeneration of the conifers in the upper stand will be taken over proportionally, as well as other mixed tree species such as birch, oak and rowan, which are naturally naturalising.

As the degree of stocking of the stand is currently still quite high, the conversion into a stand rich in structure and species with a femel to plenter forest-like structure can only succeed with the distinctly shade-tolerant tree species copper beech in light gaps. The aim is to create a mixed stand dominated by copper beech, with multiple levels and uneven-aged trees, which corresponds to the naturally occurring forest on this site.

The Hahnheide project is part of our cooperation with the Schleswig-Holstein State Forests (SHLF). With this project, we are supporting sustainable forest reorganisation in northern Germany. This project involves a 2 hectares former spruce monoculture. We plan to reforest here with oak, tree hazel and bird cherry.

The spruce stand on this site was destroyed after the drought years of 2018-2022 and the subsequent bark beetle infestation. In place of spruce, we will establish a mixed forest with several broadleaf species here, incorporating natural regeneration from neighboring stands. The goal is a climate-stable stand with greater resilience to drought, storms, and pests.

The main tree species will be oak because, as a native species, it is adapted to site conditions and copes comparatively well with climate change conditions. This will require maintenance and regulation, especially in the first 20-30 years, to develop future forest generation.

The area prepared for reforestation in the fall of 2023. We will plant a total of 10,000 sessile oaks, 1,200 red oaks, 400 bird cherries and 400 tree hazels.

Zollhaus VII is part of our cooperation with the Saxony-Anhalt State Forestry Enterprise. With this project, we support sustainable forest conversion in the Harz Mountains. The Zollhaus forest district is certified according to PEFC and FSC rules. Thank you for your support!
